In This Section:
This section was begun in July of 2006, although a preliminary effort was made to include relevant news items retroactively to the beginning of that year. For articles prior to 2006 (or for less-significant references to Leni Riefenstahl which did not merit inclusion here) one might search the Google News Archives, where one can find links to articles going back as far as the 1920s and '30s. Currently this section is updated approximately once per month, generally around the beginning of each month (time and circumstances permitting, of course) for the addition of articles from the previous month — do check back regularly for the latest news! Please note that this is a compendium of on-line articles only — more specifically news-type articles in the English language (for non-news essays, etc., one should refer to the Selected Leni Riefenstahl Links section of this site) and does not include articles which have been published in print format only. However, no discrimination has been made with regard to sources — an article might be from the New York Times or from BBC News just as easily as it might have come from a small Jewish cultural journal or a right-wing socialist magazine. Similarly, no discrimination with regard to content has been made in determining any article's merits for inclusion here — it might be either positive or negative (or neutral) toward Leni Riefenstahl as a person and/or toward her films, books, etc. — with the only criterium being that it is somehow relevant in the information it provides to the subject. In that regard, a perfect example of something that would not be included here would be what seems to have become a fairly common practice amongst some film critics, that when reviewing a documentary which they do not like, when unable to come up with any valid reason for their opinion they can always resort to hurling the epithetic phrase that "It's just like something Leni Riefenstahl would do." This sort of gratuitous derogatory reference tells us virtually nothing about Riefenstahl herself, of course (let alone about whatever film is being reviewed or it's director), but in all likelihood only betrays instead that writer's thorough ignorance and overt prejudice about who Leni Riefenstahl really was. ;‑) In addition, it should also be stressed that simply because an article is listed here, that does not necessarily mean that anything which has been reported in that article is accurate! On the contrary, an article might be relevant for inclusion here as an example of what has been so much bad and misleading reportage about Leni Riefenstahl (see, for example, the January 30th, 2006, article Beauty and Fascist Aesthetics, which contains several blatantly innacurate "facts" about her). As such, regardless of whether one is a serious researcher or merely an idle web surfer — and no matter how respectable any author might be (or appear to be) — it is strongly recommended that additional sources be sought out for any claims made at any of these external sites (in particular any that might be especially controversial or extreme). Caveat lector! Reader beware! You Can Contribute! If you are aware of any significant news articles (since January of 2006, or later) which may have been overlooked and which you feel should be included here (or to report any errors, etc.), please don't hesitate to use the You Can Contribute! form linked to at the bottom of this page (or at the bottom of the archive for each year).
