Nearly half a century after her last film, Tiefland, Leni Riefenstahl released Impressionen unter Wasser, a compilation of footage shot during hundreds of deep-sea dives that she took with her companion, Horst Kettner, when she was in her 90s. The film had it's premiere in August of 2002, in conjunction with celebrations for Leni's 100th birthday.

Synopsis

"With photography that's full of beauty and grace, Leni Riefenstahl shows underwater flora and fauna in an unparalleled way, serving to also seek to protect it in these times of increasing environmental destruction. The magnificently colourful images are simultaneously both calm and full of spirit, and carry one along on a wonderful journey through the world of our oceans. Lose yourselves in an unusually enchanting work!"

— Translation of the liner notes for the DVD version of the film

"It is my heart's desire that the photography in this film will make the viewers realize what they will lose if they are not able to prevent the further destruction of the coral reefs."

— Leni Riefenstahl (from the prologue to the film)
